What to Expect at Your First Mahjongg Lesson!

Your first mah jongg lesson may feel a little overwhelming, but no experience is needed. You do not need to study beforehand, memorize the card, or bring your own set.

You will begin by learning the tiles, including dots, bams, craks, winds, dragons, flowers, and jokers. Your instructor will then explain the basic flow of the game, how to use the National Mah Jongg League card, and how the Charleston works.

Beginner games are slow and instructional. Questions are encouraged, and mistakes are expected. You may not complete a winning hand during your first lesson—and that is perfectly fine. The goal is to become comfortable with the tiles, the card, and the rhythm of play.

Beginner games are intentionally slow and instructional. Your instructor may pause the game, help you evaluate possible hands, remind you of the rules, and explain why a particular tile may or may not be useful.

Questions are encouraged. Making mistakes is expected. In fact, mistakes are one of the best ways to learn.

You May Not Complete a Hand Right Away

It is very common not to declare mah jongg during your first lesson. The goal is not to win. The goal is to begin recognizing the tiles, understanding the rhythm of play, and learning how to organize your hand. Confidence develops gradually, one game at a time.
