Mahjongg North of Boston

Mahjongg North of Boston is a community organization dedicated to bringing people together through the game of American Mahjongg. Serving Reading, Massachusetts, and surrounding communities north of Boston, we provide welcoming opportunities for players of all skill levels to learn, play, and enjoy this timeless game while building meaningful friendships and strengthening community connections.

Whether you are new to Mahjongg or an experienced player, our organization offers instructional programs, organized games, social gatherings, and special events designed to help players grow their skills, expand their social circles, and deepen their appreciation for the game. Our members share a commitment to preserving the traditions of American Mahjongg while creating an inviting environment for newcomers.

Our founder, Jill Shuman, was introduced to Mahjongg at the age of four in a multi-generational household where Tuesday was always “Mahjongg Day.” One of her favorite family stories involves her great-grandmother, who spoke little English, playing regularly with three other women who also did not speak English. Despite the language barrier, they gathered around the Mahjongg table for more than fifteen years, proving that the game itself became their common language.

Although Jill did not become an avid player until later in life, she eventually discovered that a weekly Mahjongg game offered far more than entertainment. It fostered lasting friendships, intellectual stimulation, and a strong sense of community. As she transitioned into retirement, she decided to share those benefits with others by creating Mahjongg North of Boston in 2025. Her vision was simple: to help people of all backgrounds find connection, comfort, and social engagement through the game she loves.

Today, Mahjongg North of Boston continues to grow as a vibrant gathering place for players throughout the Greater Boston area. Through education, sportsmanship, fellowship, and fun, we promote lifelong learning, meaningful social interaction, and an appreciation for one of the world’s most enduring and intellectually rewarding games.
