League and Tournament Scoring
A group member reached out to ask about ‘scoring’ in anticipation of joining a league or tournament.
There are two ways this is commonly done—one simpler than the other. We will discuss each of the two in all of our upcoming one-day strategy sessions.
When we start League play this fall, the following are our house rules:
We use a simple scenario called points.
Simply, the player who wins the hand receives the number of points listed to the far right of the hand.
if no one wins (wall hand), each player gets 10 points.
If the winning hand contains no jokers, the winner accumulates an additional 10 points.

In tournament play, the above rules are typically enforced, along with the following:
If the player picks the winning tile from the wall—rather than from a discard—they receive additional points. (Each tournament can decide the exact number)
If the winning tile is picked from a discard, the player who threw the winning tile is penalized points, depending on how many exposures the ultimate winning hand had up prior to the Mahjongg.
If. Mahjongg is called and the hand is found to be incorrect, a penalty will be incurred.
if a hand is called dead, for any reason, a penalty will be incurred.
